Last Shelby Up For Grabs
Ok, not really “for grabs” but Carroll’s last Shelby is going up for auction on January 19th at the Barrett - Jackson auction. They are expecting to break records. The only thing is - well, the car is not totally original. He’s made modifications, Shelby that is, gosh - is anybody going to care? Hmmm, don’t think so - this car is more “Shelby” than any other “Shelby” out there. The modifications started when Shelby had decided to buy one of the last of the 69 -70 run of the GT 500’s, however they didn’t come in his color choices. This car was originally white was repainted in red with white stripes. He also replaced the 5 spoke wheels with 10 spoke wheels which were apparently more to his aesthetic taste. Carroll also added a Police interceptor intake, a prototype “Cobra” big block aluminum oil pan, and Cobra LeMans valve covers. The covers were then too tall for the factory ram- air induction system, so Carroll relaced it with a chrome open element air cleaner. During the 69 - 70 production run of GT500 convertibles there were only 355 of these cars made. It is indeed a high performance vehicle - sporting a legendary 428 Cobra Jet big - block. This particular car has only 69,725 miles on it - at such an age. Wow! The car has been fully restored under the direction of Stephen Becker, famous Shelby Mustang Collector, broker and expert. Restoration was preformed at Jim Cowles’ Shelby Parts & Restoration in Wisconsin. It was virtually rust free and only some minor bumps and bruises were repaired on this car. The car has had one owner for 4 decades - the only other Shelby vehicle he has owned longer is the CSX2000 - which was his first Cobra. This legendary and possibly record setting event will occur on January 19th, 2008, between 5 and 7 p.m. EST. The car is scheduled to appear on main stage as lot number 1287 .
