Wednesday afternoon on July 23rd I visited Hillbank Motorsports at 6 Autry , Irvine, Ca 92618. Hillbank Motorsports is home of Superformance, and Shelby Distribution USA. Manger Steve Chirrick gave me the grand tour of their incredible facility. Hillbank Motorsports is home to some of the greatest American racing legends of all time, the Ford GT40, They Shelby Cobra, and the Shelby Daytona Coupe. They can also modify your Mustang for you so you can make your Porsche – owning – neighbors scared to come out of their garage.

The Ford GT40 was created from Ford Motor Company’s goal to move Ford Motors to #1 through racing victories. They picked the fastest horse in the herd and attempted to buy the company – the (then) struggling Ferrari motor firm, when that fell through the only thing they could do was design a car to beat it…



So they did.



The GT40 ( 40 stands for 40 inches high) was modeled to beat the Ferrari, since Ferrari was nearly unbeatable at LeMans. Some of the main targets they set out to reach in designing it were:

1. To reach a top speed of 200mph
2. To lap LeMans at 130MPH
3. To run the entire 24 hours at an average speed of 120 MPH.
And so was born the GT40…

The Shelby Cobras had conquered the GT class races, and Carroll Shelby is known as the GT40’s “Godfather” because he was one of the most important figures in the evolution the first GT40.

Once completed, it was a was a technical and aesthetic force to be reckoned with, placing 1-2-3 at Le Mans in 1966, with further victories in the next three years in a row. It is now the “LEGEND OF LEMANS”…

The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe:

There were only 6 Daytona Coupes ever built for the 1964 to 65 racing season. They were built for auto racing, specifically to take on Ferrari in the GT class.

In the first year of competition the Daytona Coupe won the GT class at Sebring and placed 4th at LeMans - fast enough to give Ferrari officials sweaty palms. Today the original Daytona Coupes have sold for over 10 million dollars.
