Was Ford Better than Plymouth and Chevrolet?
Competitors such as “Plymouth” which released its Barracuda 2 weeks prior sold a total of 23, 443 cars in their first year. Ford sold over 22,000 on the first DAY the Mustang was released. Here you can see a picture of Plymouths first Barracuda:
Chevrolet had the Corvette out since 1953. Between 1953 and 1962 Chevrolet sold a total of 69,015 cars. So, with a 10 year head start, Chevrolet sold about as many corvettes as Ford sold in the first 1 month of Mustang sales. Here is a photo of a 1965 Corvette:
To compete with the Mustang, Chevrolet released the Camaro. It was marketed toward the same public, and was priced approximately the same ( average cost in 1967 was $2400). Approximately 220,000 were sold in their first year, approximately 1/4 of Mustangs sales for its first year. The Camaro was also only available with a 6 cylinder engine, while Mustangs had 3 engine options to choose from. Here is a picture of a 1967 Camaro:
