The “Real” Mustang -Your Mascot Update
Just wanted to drop in a word to keep everyone informed on the training progress of our website mascot “Diablo”. He was recently saddlebroken ( I did it by myself with my girlfriend Holly) and I have since dumped the saddle and train him the basic cues just bareback. Here are some pictures during today’s training. He is being a very good boy and will soon be ready to meet the 1965 “Steel” Mustang, and take pictures for posters, do parade training and community service. He makes a great mascot.
He will be 3 years old in this April 2008. He is very sweet in the arena but when I get him outside the barn area he becomes competitive and stimulated by other horses and turns into a Wild Man. He has grown a lot and can be extremely difficult to handle when he’s in compete mode.
The other day he drug me 30 feet across the arena, skidding in my boots. He doesn’t mean to be bad, he’s just spirited. Since I will never win an argument using “strength” with him, I rely on understanding, building trust and very “clear” directions. So far he knows the following things:
Forward, reverse, stop, left, right. He knows my voice and his name and answers back to it, he knows how to get out of his stall by himself, he knows how to go back to his stall by himself when you say “ go to your room”.
