Part 1 continued - progress on the 1965 Fastback

Here is the second part of stage 1 of our 1965 A code Fastback restoration.

The front fenders are now primed and the hood is as well. It looks AMAZING!

Here is the top of the hood – primed and ready to go, along with the headlight housing…

Here is one of the new front floor pans! Bran new!

But the best part is the gorgeous new 289 V8 – steam cleaned, resealed and painted. This looks beautiful. The carburator is being rebuilt – along with the transmission.

In taking the engine apart we found that we needed a new water pump and fuel pump. The fuel pump lever has a chunk of metal missing from it where a bolt which was placed incorrectly on the timing chain cover had been hitting it. The person who previously restored it had done this incorrectly, it could have caused disasters at some point and blew up the engine. Thank god we found it.

The next thing we will be doing is painting the Fastback, purchasing our exhaust system and rear valence – among other things. A BIG THANKYOU to my friend Mike Brown, president of the SoCal Cougar Club, for giving us the tips and resources that have made a difference. We have the paint picked out – it is the highest quality I could find on the market. Stay tuned…

Poetry In Motion - Part 1 of Fastback Resto

Poetry in motion…

This is stage one of the 1965 Fastback restoration we are doing for a customer. At this stage it is dismantled and the paint is nearly completely stripped off. This car was restored once before, and we were lucky – whoever restored it before did it correctly and used all the right parts.

Here is the engine. It is actually in really decent shape, needs cleaning, possible timing chain repair and we are rebuilding the carburetor…

Here is an interior shot. The entire interior will be replaced with new pony interior…

In stripping the paint, one of the most IMPORTANT things to do is make sure the paint stripper does NOT run to the edge of the panel or section you are working on. The reason is that it will dry, and then when it’s wet again from rain it will reactivate again and then creep back into the fresh paint.

Here is a picture of the old exhaust system which will certainly be upgraded for better proformance.

I will be getting the paint and interior colors finalized this week. The transmission is getting rebuilt right now. Stay tuned!

The Latest

We have a lot going on at MustangMadam.Com these days and I have been falling behind on blogging! We have a 65 Fastback restoration project beginning and a magazine we are putting together. We are setting up a photoshoot within the next week for the magazine, and we are getting advertisers for it now. We have content and LOTS to come. Really too much to list. The magazine distribution is going to be about 20,000 just to start. Stay tuned!

much love,
