Interview with Ken Sobel, classic car enthusiast who was chosen to take the Mustang for a spin one week before it’s release on April 17th 1964. Here is his story:
MM: Were you contacted by Ford How did this come about?
KS: I was shopping for a new car and went to a Ford dealer in Hollywood, CA, to look at the Falcon V8 with a 4-speed transmission.
The salesman took me into the back of the dealership to show me a car that I would probably be very interested in. It was at night and the lighting wasn’t great in that corner of the dealership’s lot. There was a car under a tarp and when the salesman removed the tarp he revealed a car that I had never even heard of. It was a dark blue, white interior Mustang! WOW!
<
He told me that Ford wanted to get some public input about the vehicle and that I should take it for about an hour and drive with my girlfriend back and forth down Hollywood Boulevard.
MM: What was your reaction? What were other people’s reactions to seeing this car on Hollywood Boulevard?
KS: Well, imagine driving a totally unknown vehicle on Hollywood Boulevard for an hour during Cruise Night! People were almost falling out of their cars trying to get a better look at the Mustang! I was duly impressed.
I got back to the dealership and immediately ordered a Mustang coupe (even though I live in Southern California, I’m not a convertible person). The order included the 271 horsepower high-performance 289″ engine, 4-speed transmission, limited-slip differential, etc. I was ready to rock!
MM: That’s awesome!
KS: In retrospect, the residual value of the Mustang is out of this world! The styling is classic and the looks that one must get must be pleasing to their owners. Today, my weekend car is my 1934 Dodge with its 82 horsepower flathead six! Things sure change.

To all your readers - Keep the old cars running. Take them out often and share them with others. Everywhere I go with my old Dodge I must add extra time to talk about her with the public. You should do so with your cars too!

Here are a couple of the Shelby’s that were shown at the recent car show. This one is a clone. The restoration took 5 years to complete. It has 302 Dyno to 510 horsepower! It also features the Mustang II front end.
The sound of this baby was literally out of this world. Mustang engines, when they are well done are like a kick – ass hard rock song.

This is a VERY rare 1968 Shelby GT 500 KR below. It was SO hot. “KR” stands for “King of the Road” for good reason. A car like this goes for around $200,000 right now, the same value as the Ferrari that was down the block from this car. It was definitely a show car, but looked like the owners also had fun “using” the car. I truly believe in DRIVING your car, not just garaging it 24/7. You have to SHARE with the world, and people appreciate this a lot. I have had people tell me that just seeing a classic mustang made their day.

Just wanted to drop in a word to keep everyone informed on the training progress of our website mascot “Diablo”. He was recently saddlebroken ( I did it by myself with my girlfriend Holly) and I have since dumped the saddle and train him the basic cues just bareback. Here are some pictures during today’s training. He is being a very good boy and will soon be ready to meet the 1965 “Steel” Mustang, and take pictures for posters, do parade training and community service. He makes a great mascot.

He will be 3 years old in this April 2008. He is very sweet in the arena but when I get him outside the barn area he becomes competitive and stimulated by other horses and turns into a Wild Man. He has grown a lot and can be extremely difficult to handle when he’s in compete mode.

The other day he drug me 30 feet across the arena, skidding in my boots. He doesn’t mean to be bad, he’s just spirited. Since I will never win an argument using “strength” with him, I rely on understanding, building trust and very “clear” directions. So far he knows the following things:
Forward, reverse, stop, left, right. He knows my voice and his name and answers back to it, he knows how to get out of his stall by himself, he knows how to go back to his stall by himself when you say “ go to your room”.
A percentage of all profits from Mustangmadam.com is going toward preserving wild mustangs on the plains of America.

The Cool Cruise Show in La Verne, California had more Classic Mustangs than the last show I went to, but only enough to leave me wanting more. Here are shots of the rest of the 1965 Mustangs through 1967 Mustangs we spotted. Thankyou to everyone who helped us take these pictures!
This was an oh so sweet 1967 baby blue mustang…

This was a stunning silvery blue 1965 Mustang with a 289 V8 Hi Performance engine. LOOK! It was gorgeous. The owner of this beauty arrived at 3 AM to the show to get a good spot! I got there at 9 am, and boy did I get lectured by him, but I really appreciate his tips!!! I’m the “new kid on the block” at the car shows so I have a lot to learn.

This PURPLE PONY got up early to get this choice spot right next to the CHILI COOK OFF. WHICH WAS AWESOME. We tried 2 kinds of chili and I scored a free Corona from one of the chefs on top of that. It was incredible! People have endless creativity when it comes to chili, and good taste in beer.

This sizzling 1966 Mustang was featured in the book showing in her trunk, and it is owned by a CLASSIC MUSTANG MADEMOISELLE who attends all the car shows and really knows her stuff. We loved talking to her.

Tomorrow I will be writing about…. More MUSTANGS!
